Exterior Wall Coatings for Winter Rising Damp Treatment
Now is most definitely the time to be booking a rising damp treatment for every household in the UK. If your exterior wall coatings are not applied soon, then the onset of British winter will make it harder and harder to get any guaranteed protection happening. Rising damp treatment, if it is booked and completed early enough, can be a year round protection against the appalling damage caused by water rising through the walls of a house. It’s done with exterior wall coatings because that’s how the water tends to get in – it creeps up through the outer surface of walls as the capillary action of the porous brick sucks it from the water table. Usually, a water course will offer protection against this – but even modern water coursing is liable to block after a couple of years. A part of your rising damp treatment should be an examination of the water course, fixing it where necessary: the water course funnels excess moisture away from the walls and foundations of your home, so if it becomes blocked or cracked you are looking at the first stage of a lot of trouble.
Exterior wall coatings work in much the same way as skin. They are permeable but not porous – so they let water out, but not in. The one way permeability of your skin is what keeps you dry but lets you sweat: and the same is true of the coatings applied to your house during a course of rising damp treatment. These exterior coats are either applied as a clear, invisible membrane on top of existing brick or decoration; or they can be applied as a specifically treated paint, which means you can decorate and protect the outside of your house at the same time.
In a British winter, rising damp is the number one cause of structural problems and poor health experienced by home owners and the people who live with them. Exterior wall coatings, which do not cost a great deal of money (certainly nowhere near as much as having a wall rebuilt after the damp gets to it too badly), are a wise, indeed a necessary precaution. Get rising damp treatment now and ride out the winter without worry.
